I'Ve Been Struggling Since Yesterday To Write Something About This Scene

I've been struggling since yesterday to write something about this scene. I've seen great analyses on this scene, all so true and emotional, I thought: "there's no need for one more". But then I remembered something from when I was reading about Heraclitus a while ago that inspired me to write about fire as a transition vehicle. Fire is one of the four elements that rules nature. Fire is paradoxal, it's life and rebirth, death and destruction. Fire was Heraclitus's arché, the element from which derives everything surrounding us. For him, fire was the dynamic reality of this world. In one of his fragments, he explains that when fire becomes water (sea), half returns to the sky as fireburst, the other half becomes earth. Earth then liquefies into water, which becomes fire again, in this circular flux of renewal. Like Heraclitus said, "life is flux", things are both the same and not the same over time: "into the same rivers we step and do not step". The same staircase can lead you up or down. It's the unity of opposites, another concept of Heraclitus's dialect. The same fire that can be destruction can also be rebirth. E&O's relationship was born from the fire they had inside, the desire to live, to surrender in each other's arms, to be with each other and be the other. The same fire that then consumed that summer, that afternoon Elio stared into the fire. From that he would grow stronger. Elio had to rise from his sorrow, like a Phoenix rises from its own ashes. It was the end and the beginning. And for the record, what died in that fire was "merely" Elio's hopes of ever being with Oliver, sharing life with him, as he once did. Because his love... his love never went away.
