Monet in Bordighera
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Bordighera is the famous “B.”, the town in the Italian Riviera where “Call Me By Your Name” is set in the book. In 1884, artist Claude Monet travelled to B., having been introduced to that part of the Riviera by fellow painter and friend, Renoir, the year before. One of the main attractions in B. was the Moreno Garden, owned by merchant man, Francesco Moreno. Monet worked in several paintings while staying at Moreno's land. The diversity of plants in the place fascinated Monet, who described the garden as “pure magic”. Although he was enchanted by Moreno's Garden, Monet had found working at the place very difficult. He had trouble finding motifs to paint, since there was so many beautiful and new things to his Parisian eyes; he was always on a busy schedule, painting 3 to 4 pieces a day; he'd often catch bad weather, because he went there in the winter, and he was constantly unsatisfied with the colors he was using, having said: “...I sometimes feel terrified by the colours I am forced to use.” Despite all the problems, Monet had very prolific days in B. He painted the city's view of the sea, lots of palm trees, and also... olive trees!
Monet is my favorite painter of all time, and this connection between him and CMBYN makes my heart so happy. 💕
