Three Months Before Her Wedding, This Best Friend Shaved Her Head For Most Amazing Reason

When Gina Helton moved to a new school in third grade, she was devastated. Every day she would cry, wishing she could just move back to the surroundings that were familiar to her, where she had friends to play with and feel some sense of belonging. That is, until she met Alycia Kuberski.

Kuberski and a few other girls at St. Joseph Catholic School in DeWitt, IA, tried to cheer Helton up with a card to make her feel more welcome in this seemingly new, strange place. And the rest is history. The two have been inseparable ever since.

Flash forward to the fall of 2014, when Helton was diagnosed with Cushing's disease—a rare illness caused by an ectopic tumor found in her lung. Most tumors causing Cushing's disease are benign, however, Helton's was found to be a cancerous carcinoid tumor. Doctor's chose to remove her full left lung in January of 2015, and what they found upon the removal was heartbreaking—the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes. She underwent the biggest battle of her life with chemotherapy this year in April.

Because of the effects of chemotherapy, her hair began to fall out in clumps. Helton decided this was the perfect time to take control of her body, so she set up a head shaving party with all of her closest friends and family.

When Kuberski arrived to the party, she started asking Helton all sorts of questions, and finally threw her hands up and said, "I'm going to shave my head, too."

"NO, YOU ARE NOT," Helton stated. "You are getting married in three months. No. Just no!"

To which her best friend beautifully replied, "It's just hair. This is nothing compared to what you have been through."

So Kuberski plopped down right next to her BFF and braced herself for a barren head. As Helton's mom shaved her daughter's head, Kuberski's sister shaved hers at the exact same time.

Helton told, "She helped me turn what may have been a devastating event into a beautiful one. I had purchased a wig, but I only wore it once. She helped remind me that 'bald is beautiful!'"

Amazingly, Helton has been cancer and Cushing's disease-free since she completed radiation in August this year. She encourages those going through this excruciating battle to never give up and know that God will always place people in your life to help you through it, like he placed Kuberski in hers.

"You never know what battle someone else may be facing. Be kind always."
