Mice, Dress Zippers & Moving… Single Girl Problems!
There are certain things that make me feel super single. Seeing a mouse in my apartment, trying to zip the back of a dress when I’m home alone… and moving.
I’ve had some pretty traumatic moving experiences, which I’ve written about in “There’s Nothing like Moving to Remind a Girl She’s Single“.
Neil Patrick Harris bought the brownstone next door to me right before lease renewals came, sooo my rent is going up, and I’m moving out. The timing could not have been worse, this is the first week of #PSPfit and choosing a busy time to do a stressful thing is a recipe for disaster, but this time things are different.
First off, my parents are in from California and my Dad flew in early to help me get packed (he even came to the #PSPfit party at Lane Bryant on Saturday!) Second, I’m dating someone. Robert has been so hands on and supportive of my crazy ideas. Last weekend he was up at 6am to help us shoot the #PSPfit videos and this weekend he’s been helping us haul boxes!
Having my two favorite guys helping me get my life together made me feel grateful. It also reminded me of the times when I felt so alone. My family was on the other side of the country and I felt like I everyone was growing up and suddenly instead of being a big group of us navigating the city together, my friends were all coupled off and doing things with their significant others. This started happening to me when I wasn’t dating anyone and it was a lonely feeling.
I bring this up because being the only single friend in your circle can feel like never ending torture. I was solo for way longer than I wanted to be, but looking back it really wasn’t that long in the grand scheme of things. While my friends were busy learning about boyfriend after boyfriend, I learned a lot about myself. I grew the most as a person when I wasn’t dating anyone, so now I’m much more solid and independent than I would have been if I was in a relationship while trying to figure out what I wanted.
My Ms. Independent swag makes my Dad proud of me (winning!) and its one of the things Robert finds attractive about me (winning!). Both are things that made my time fighting mice, wriggling out of dresses and moving boxes alone, well worth it!
Thanks always being there, Papa!
Thanks for the help this weekend, R.!
…and no, he’s not proposing, he’s helping me fill water bottles!
