The Weirdest Symptoms Of Early Pregnancy

Many early pregnancy symptoms are considered common knowledge. Open discussions of morning sickness, tiredness and an increased need to go to the bathroom have become the norm. But here are some more alternative hints that your body may just be giving you to indicate you are pregnant.

VEINS. As the uterus expands to make room for the growing fetus, pressure can be placed on the inferior vena cava which is the large blood vessel that runs down the right side of your body. This reduces blood flow to the legs causing varicose veins. But it doesn't stop there! Some women experience these in their vulva ("vulval varicosities") or even worse afflictions known as "hemorrhoids". Early in pregnancy, some women liken their breasts to "road maps" due to the added prominence of these blue veins.

BLOCKED OR STUFFY SINUSES. Have you noticed that you're waking up with a blocked nose? Or perhaps you need to blow your nose more often than usual? This happens due to an increase in snot and mucous production during pregnancy. Yep, you heard it! MUCOUS! And it doesn't only occur in your sinuses!

METALLIC TASTE: Also known as dysgeusia, this sensory change often starts to go away after the first trimester but it can stick around for the duration of the pregnancy. The sensation has been described as "having a mouth full of loose change" or "sucking on a hand rail". Ew.

FLATULENCE. Notice people pulling faces around you? The increase in Progesterone during pregnancy can slow down the digestive system, allowing more time for gasses to build. And those gases need to escape somehow! This is where older kids can come in handy - BLAME THEM! If not, a husband or partner will suffice.

BLEEDING GUMS & NOSES. On the topic of mouth ailments, many pregnant women experience bleeding gums and noses. Due to an increase in hormones, gums are more likely to become inflamed and bleed when brushed or flossed. The blood vessels in the nose can also expand during pregnancy increasing the risk of nose bleeds.

CONSTIPATION. Since we're on the topic of bodily functions, these same hormonal changes also have an affect on the bowels, often causing constipation. (You might want to keep a book in there!)

VIVID DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES. Those pesky hormones have been blamed for an increase in vivid dreams and nightmares too. But there is also another explanation. A pregnant woman's sleep is often broken during pregnancy, whether it's from those midnight bathroom runs, baby movement or cramps. And the more recent a dream is, the more likely it will be remembered.

DIZZINESS. Low blood pressure during pregnancy can lead to dizziness. A change in the centre of gravity due to an increase baby bump and hormonal changes affecting ligaments can also cause pregnant women to be unsteady on their feet. However, some women report having "butter fingers" early on too!

OTHER CHILDREN. Not all symptoms are experienced by the expectant mother. For those who already have children in the home, they may become clingier and more needy than usual. If a pregnant mother is still breastfeeding another child, they may refuse the breast as the pregnancy hormones can alter the taste of a mother's breastmilk.
