Dad Promises Relative To Name Daughter After Her - But Furious Wife 'Hates It'
A husband who had an agreement with his wife that she could choose their daughter's name has sparked a huge fight by promising a relative to name their daughter after her.
When the couple had their first child, a boy, they agreed the dad could name him after his own father, as long as his wife could be the one to choose the name of their second child.
They discovered the mum is now expecting a daughter, and she had her mind set on a name she had already picked out.
The husband says the name is 'not important to her or anything, just one she thinks is pretty and really likes', and he was fine with it 'at first'.
But he recently got in touch with a relative and shared the exciting news of the newest addition to their family, and she asked if they would name their daughter after her.
"She was always there for me growing up and we were close as kids, so I said 'sure, of course'," he said.
"I told my wife that I told my relative we would name our daughter after her, and she got p***ed.
"She said the deal was that she got to choose the name, that I already named our son after my family, and it was her turn.
"I reminded her we agreed to be able to veto names and she said that was for a name we really didn't like, not to forcefully choose a name.
"I told her it would be really disrespectful to up and tell her that we're no longer naming her after her and I already made a promise and I didn't want to break it.
"She basically said I'm going to have to break it because 'she hates that name' and 'she's going to have a say in our daughter's name whether I like it or not'.
"We got in a huge argument, where I basically called her inconsiderate for not trying to see where I'm coming from when I have ties to this name and she has no ties to the name she wants.
"[She's] getting mad because even if she has no ties 'she knows what she wants to name her daughter and that's all that should matter'.
"Now we haven't really talked since them, she seems p***ed and when I talked to my friends about it they said it was kinda a**hole-ish of me to go back on our agreement."
After turning to Reddit for help, he was quickly put in his place by those pointing out that he was desperate not to break the promise to his relative, but more than happy to tear up the promise he had made to his wife.
One replied: "You're the a**hole and it's honestly hilarious that you would call your wife the inconsiderate one when you went behind her back and basically stole the baby's name away from her without even a discussion about it first.
"Man up chief, you're the one that f****d up - tell the family member the name's already been decided and you made a mistake in claiming otherwise."
A second wrote: "You’re reneging on an agreement because you’re not enough of an adult to have told your relative the truth."
