The Strange Thing That Makes Certain Guys Seem More Like Fling Material
Sometimes, it feels like it's damn near impossible to predict whether a first date will blossom into a steady relationship. But there's one surprising reason you might view a guy as a hookup—not a boyfriend—without even realizing it: Women view men with wide faces as more attractive for short-term relationships, according to a new study published in the journal Psychological Science.
For the study, researchers from Singapore surveyed 159 speed daters, focusing primarily on how the women at the event felt about the men. They found that women rated men with broad faces as more sexually attractive than other guys, possibly because that makes men look more "dominant," which is often associated with better health and higher social status.
But while these men turned the women on, it wasn't enough for the ladies to want a long-term relationship with them. See, previous research has found that men with these types of faces can also come off as untrustworthy and unfaithful—so that may be why participants only thought of these men as good short-term options, say study authors.
Of course, you shouldn't write off a guy just because he's got a wide jaw—it could mean you're ruling out some men with real potential.
