Celebs & Periods: Fashion

Periods + clothes. It’s a subject every woman can relate to, also the famous ones. If it’s not about fearing for leakage stains or feeling the need to wear something loose, than it’s wishing we had a t-shirt that makes clear you’re menstruating so no-one will ask why you’re so grumpy. Here are the period & clothes stories of Jennifer Lawrence, Miley Cyrus and Lily Allen.

Jennifer Lawrence’s plan B dress

The reason why The Hunger Games actress Jennifer Lawrence chose that red sleeveless Dior gown to the Golden Globes in January 2016? Her period! In a Harper’s Bazaar interview, Lawrence explains: ‘That was my plan-B dress. Plan A was a dress that I couldn’t wear because awards season is synced with my menstrual cycle, and it has been for years.’ Thus, she chose the red one because ‘it was loose at the front. And I didn’t have to worry about sucking anything in. The other dress was really tight, and I’m not going to suck in my uterus. I don’t have to do that.’ Go Jennifer – although most of us would probably opt for some non-tight jogging wear when menstruating. (Photo: facebook.com/JenniferLawrence/)

Miley Cyrus’ white trousers

It must officially be the worst item of clothing to wear when you get your period: a white pair of trousers. And that was exactly what singer-songwriter and actress Miley Cyrus was wearing when she got her first period, when filming a series of the musical comedy Hannah Montana. In an interview with Marie Claire, she says about this situation: ‘It was so embarrassing, but I couldn’t leave. And I was crying, begging my mom, ‘You’re going to have to put the tampon in. I have to be on set.’’ Poor Miley – no wonder she hardly ever wears white trousers anymore.

Lily Allen’s period shirts

Her song ‘Sheezus’ has the word ‘period’ in it, which is quite uncommon in music. In an interview with Rolling Stone  singer-songwriter Lily Allen states: ‘It’s groundbreaking! I’m proud of that. It’s fucking awesome…. People will wear sweatshirts to my concerts that are just going to say ‘period.’’ Nice one Lily, although artists like Dolly Parton and Mary J. Blige have already sung about menstruation (see the Period! Playlist). And until those shirts are on sale, we might wear something a tad more subtle, like this t-shirt .
