Obviously, the test should also be simple. Had it been expensive equipment or measuring devices, the test would not have been available to many people. Thus, Araujo and his colleagues have developed a test that requires no equipment and can be done in seconds.

Start by standing in the middle of a room. Without using your arms or hands as a lever, squat carefully while sitting with your legs crossed. Once you are comfortable, try to get up from the sitting position, again, without using your arms to help you.

The test is scored on a scale of points between 1 and 10 (5 points for the sitting position, 5 points for the standing position). Whenever you use an arm or knee to help balance during the test, remove one point. Half a point is subtracted from each loss of balance or when the fluidity of the feat becomes clumsy.

This conditioning test seems rather rudimentary, but Araujo discovered that he could accurately estimate life expectancy. He tested it on over 2,000 of his patients aged 51 to 80 and found that people who scored less than 8 points were twice as likely to die in the next six years. Those who scored three points or less were five times more likely to die in the same period. Overall, each point reached in the test represented a 21% decrease in mortality.

Araujo’s study focused only on patients over 50 years old.
