The Colour Of Shame?
The short movie The Beauty of Red by Indian cineaste Vimida M. Das starts as a homage to the colour red: the colour of cherries, balloons, ketchup, the cross on the doctor’s car, the symbol of love and passion.
But all this changes after the first menstruation. Red becomes the colour of bans and restrictions: don’t walk like that, don’t talk to boys, don’t dress like that, don’t think like that, don’t speak about this subject. Red becomes the colour of shame. Girls need to be explained that menstruation isn’t a disease, but something magical.
The Beauty of Red won the Canadian CrankyFest Film Festival 2014. Watch the movie on YouTube.
