Methylfolate Vs Folic Acid - What’s The Deal?

🍃Folate is found in dark green leafy veggies and is important for brain development and DNA synthesis. There are several types of folate, but in nature you will find mostly methylfolate. You will not find folic acid in nature - this is a man made substance.

Folic acid needs to undergo several steps before it is able to be used by the body. However, 40% of the population has difficulties turning folic acid into an active and usable form.

Humans have a gene called the MTHFR gene (for short) - it provides the instructions for your body to make the MTHFR enzyme. This enzyme is needed to break down several forms of folate, including folic acid, into methylfolate - the active and useable form of folate.

Variations or mutations to the MTHFR gene dictate how well a person can make the MTHFR enzyme. A MTHFR mutation can cause up to a 70% reduction in MTHFR enzyme action.

This can mean that the folic acid they are consuming is not getting turned into a useable form of folate that their body can use to support a healthy pregnancy.

In order to bypass the MTHFR gene and enzyme situation you should be taking a methylated form of folate - METHYLFOLATE. Everyone, regardless of their MTHFR gene status can absorb and utilise this form of folate.

If you have a MTHFR mutation and are not utilising folic acid then you may be at risk of folate deficiencies and brain development issues such as spina bifida in your child.

❌Most pharmacy brands of pregnancy supplements do not have the active form of folate. ❌ The folic acid given out via NZ GP’s is NOT the active form, the ‘leading’ brand of pregnancy supplements does NOT have the active form in either.
