My First Period

My First Period
I was 9 years old, and it was completely unexpected at that early age, but my mom had prepared me for the inevitability of getting my period.

I got up from the dinner table and went to the bathroom right off the kitchen, saw blood, and called for my mom. She thought I was sick, so she came running. When I showed her what had happened, she started crying. It wasn’t sad crying; it was a crying for joy --“my baby’s growing up and I can’t stop it” .

She took me to bathroom upstairs to help me get cleaned up and showed me how to use feminine hygiene products. I remember being grossed out and wondering why my friends and I all wanted this yucky thing to happen.

Once I got over the ick factor, I felt SO COOL because I’d gotten mine before almost all of my friends. I think I told every girl in my class the next day that I’d started my period. Probably also the teachers. And a few boys for good measure. I thought I was totally the bomb.

The novelty of being an early menstruator wore off quickly when the PMS, cramping, and bloating appeared in tandem with my period the following month. For one brief, shining moment, though, I was the coolest gal on the playground. A legend in my own mind!
