The REAL Reason Wentworth Miller Shared That F*Cked Up Meme
This meme of Prison Break actor Wentworth Miller (shown above) was shared more than 100,000 times by people all over the world, and according to the actor, it's not even the only one.
Miller's penned a beautifully empowering message on his Facebook page about how he has suffered from depression since childhood, and while he was semi-retired from acting, he was very suicidal, and suffering alone.
Food was the only thing that could comfort him and so he ate and he did put on a significant amount of weight.
Then this photo came out, and the disgusting memes followed. Luckily for us, Wentworth was strong enough to pull through, but many others are not.
This story hit very close to home for me. I've been suffering from depression since I was 14. I have even attempted suicide. I'm in a better place now, but it's a struggle everyday.
Like Wentworth, my drug of choice is food, and I've put on a lot of weight because of it.
But the last thing anyone who has put on weight because of depression wants to hear is: "Hey, you're really fat" or "Don't you think you need to lose some weight?".
There are also people who become depressed after they put on weight. Guess What? It's still not ok for you to bully them.
We pass by hundreds of people everyday, most of them strangers. You will never know their life story, what they've accomplished or how they've struggled. Unfortunately for Wentworth he is a celebrity so he's being watched and judged by millions of people no matter what. But it's up to us to make it stop.
Celebrity or not a celebrity, he's still human like the rest of us.
Depression is a very serious issue that doesn't get discussed enough. It's up to us to educate ourselves on depression and on ways we can positively impact those who struggle with it. Thin or thick, big or small, we are all beautiful the way we are.
