Menstrual Hygiene Day 2016

Saturday, May 28th is Menstrual Hygiene Day again. The focus of this day is to raise awareness about menstruation and the importance of hygiene worldwide. Still necessary? Yes!

Menstrual Hygiene Day (MHD) aims to end the taboo about menstruation. By raising awareness, the silence around menstrual hygiene management is broken. The ultimate goal? That every girl and woman can hygienically manage their menstruation, in privacy, safety, and with dignity. For example; with clean toilets and affordable sanitary towels. An important part of Menstrual Hygiene Day is to give information about periods so that girls know what is happening in their body and why. This education is necessary: a UNICEF study shows that 10% of the girls in India and 48% of the girls in Iran think menstruation is a disease…

Menstruation Matters for everyone, everywhere

On Saturday May 28th, activities will be organised all over the world. From educational sessions about menstruation and hygiene in African countries to events that raise awarenness in European end American countries, such as social media actions and flashmobs.

But why the 28th of May? Well, May is the fifth month of the year, representing five days, or the average number of days (between two to seven) a woman or girl spends menstruating each month. And 28 represents the average number of days in a menstrual cycle.
