Your Body at 22 Weeks Pregnant
Headaches are common in pregnancy – again as a result of changes in hormones.
Many women will be sensitive to the changes in their hormonal cycle and experience headaches at certain times of their menstrual cycle.
Headaches in pregnancy are most common in the first few months and usually settle down as the pregnancy progresses.
Headaches in late pregnancy especially associated with swelling of the hands or feet may be a sign of raised blood pressure and should prompt a visit to your doctor.
Headaches can also be caused by tiredness, stress, hunger, sinus infection and toothache!
Try the simple remedies such as a snack, 15 minutes of quietness, a quick break from whatever you are doing at the time and some fresh air.
Cold compresses on the back of the neck can be very effective.
Paracetamol is safe to take in recommended doses during pregnancy.
Migraines are a more severe form of headache and usually present as a headache associated with other signs such as vision changes, an aura before it starts, nausea and vomiting.
Women who have experience migraines outside of pregnancy will often get them during the pregnancy and unfortunately many of the medications used for migraine are not suitable for use during pregnancy.
